Johannesburg - Students who did not pass their matric have until 21 January to register for a re-marking or re-checking, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Saturday.

In a letter to matric students, Motshekga said those who failed could find application forms for re-checking and re-marking at the schools and centres where the candidates sat for their exams.

The fees are R73 for re-marking, R14 for re-checking and R153 for viewing a re-checked or re-marked examination script.

"Candidates from no-fee schools and learners whose parents have applied and have been granted a concession on the payment of schools fees are exempted from payment of re-marking and rechecking fees," Motshekga said.

Students will also be able to register to take supplementary examinations by applying at their schools or centres where they sat by 21 January.

Candidates who did not meet the minimum requirements but need as many as two subjects to obtain a national senior certificate may sit for supplementary examinations.

Proof required

They may also qualify if they could not sit or finish the exams due to medical reasons, a death in the family or other special causes.

Evidence documenting the reasons will be needed.

Motshekga also told students that if their results were withheld, they should contact the provincial head office for the exams directorate for an investigation.

One of the reasons results are withheld are due to "irregularities" in the results.

"You may work through a district office or your school but the bottom line is that the province must launch an investigation," Motshekga said.
