Durban - An agreement has been struck in which the KwaZulu-Natal health department will take over McCord Hospital in Durban, according to reports.

eNCA reported on Friday that the facility will remain open following the agreement. A joint technical team will be established to oversee the take-over process.

The hospital's board met this week with health department negotiators to discuss the department's bid to take over the hospital and transfer its staff to the provincial government.

The 104-year-old hospital announced earlier this year it would be closing after the department said it would not renew its annual subsidy.

An attempt by the provincial health department to take over the hospital was rejected by the hospital board, which announced last week that the hospital was closing its doors. The health department reportedly reconsidered its previous offer, which led to renewed negotiations this week.
