Death toll climbs in KZN crash

2011-08-06 16:16
Johannesburg - Nine people, including a child, died in an accident on the N2 in Kokstad on Saturday, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said.

Spokesperson Kwanele Ncalene said a 3-year-old boy was among those who died at the scene.

A taxi and a minibus travelling from Gauteng collided on the highway, he said. The taxi was making a U-turn on the highway when the bus came crashing into it.

Both vehicles lost control, rolled down a 10m embankment and landed in a river.

Ncalane said the taxi had been pulled out of the river and officials were trying to get the bus out of the water.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said 32 people were taken to hospital for injuries they sustained.
