Deaths mar Christmas

Johannesburg - At least three people died violently countrywide on Cristmas Day - one was stoned to death, another died by his own hand and in the Eastern Cape, a man was beaten to death.

A 72-year-old doctor appeared to have shot and killed himself in Marble Hall, Limpopo,  SABC radio news reported on Sunday.

No suicide note was left, according to police.

An inquest docket has been opened.

In neighbouring North West, the body of a man in his forties was found at Moshawane village, near Mahikeng.

Police spokesperson Sam Tselanyane said it appeared that the man was stoned to death by a group of people while walking home.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, the body of a 32-year-old man was found lying in an open field near Michausdal township, Cradock.

He had sustained head injuries.

Police have opened a murder docket.
