Delmas residents pray for peace

2012-06-22 10:36

Johannesburg - Around 250 residents of Delmas of all races joined hands in the town's main road on Thursday to pray for a better future, Beeld reported on Friday.

The prayer meeting was organised after the May 23 murders of 66-year-old Margrietha de Goede and 5-month-old baby Wiehan Botes, and a recent protest by rightwingers in the town.

On Thursday, Eva Makhabane, mayor of the Victor Khanye municipal district, said the rightwingers "were not Delmas's people".

The true community of Delmas, she said, was the one that joined hands and prayed that the town would be known in future as a place of love and prosperity.

Makhabane and the religious ministers in the town organised the prayer chain in the main road.

Where rightwingers had burned a national flag, a new one was hoisted, while black and white people sang the national anthem.

The mayor and the ministers read a joint statement, in which they condemned violent crime on behalf of the community, and made a commitment to reconciliation, justice, equality and peace.

Good thing, only if it won't be a once off thing which is always colour sided. We sow the same support at Kortzes case when the ANC women's league showed their community support.Africans, continue to show them UBUNTU.

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-06-22 11:49

      Ubuntu is a myth.

      eric.west.984 - 2012-06-22 12:08

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - I agree 100%!!

      Bulls - 2012-06-22 12:57

I think vandermerwe and west are more of a myth than you perceive UBUNTU. UBUNTU is a myth on people who do not have any respect for human life & rights, I do not blame you and west though for saying that, the western culture do not believe in UBUNTU,individualism is their way of life but they are catching up lately by learning from Africans, thanx to Bill Clinton and Mark Shuttleworth for taking UBUNTU to the west, maybe the world will be at peace after thier mission have been accomplished.

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-06-23 01:01

All the black on black indicates to me that Ubuntu is a myth. Why kill your own kind then?

  • Chez - 2012-06-22 10:54

Now thats what we need. The comment section on so many stories on News24 cna be very agressive and scary. This is the South Africa I know and love. These are the true people of this land!

  • vloermoer - 2012-06-22 11:00

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-22 11:03

How do you know the family of the deceased was not there? And what's wrong with a community uniting?

      vloermoer - 2012-06-22 11:06

I'll put money on it .... you wanna unite with murders and rapists - be my guest - but don't cry when you are one of the stats ...

      Bulls - 2012-06-22 11:08

That's your culture I believe "everyone for himself" in Africa we hold hands in pain and happiness. It is called UBUNTU jou vloermoer.

      Zimbobwe - 2012-06-22 11:18

Vloermoer with your attitude you'll be one of the stat very soon. Kry jou grootkop uit jou agter and see the bigger picture. Retaliate at your own peril!!!

      msendi - 2012-06-22 11:36

@vloermoer… If what these people are doing will never provide a solution… According to your own opinion what is a solution because crime is a problem?

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-22 14:20

You do not show the same support all the time but start toy-toying when it is in your interest. UBUNTU is a six letter word, no more.

    Faith in humanity: slightly restored

  • Sagin - 2012-06-22 11:03

delmas You all just wasted your time!

      E=MC2 - 2012-06-22 11:08

so rather get together & burn the national flag? That sounds more like a waste of time

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-22 11:10

No, they sent a small message that there are still peace seekers out there. I for one, am happy to hear that people unite after such a tragedy.

      Bulls - 2012-06-22 11:22

@sagin,I recommend Serenace for you, It is known to be effective for paranoia.

      Sagin - 2012-06-22 12:38

You people suffer from the classic ostrich syndrome. the writing is on the wall for all who have eyes and can see.wake up people

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-22 14:21

Sagin, I don't agree, we have to start somewhere.

  • E=MC2 - 2012-06-22 11:07

thats actually a breath of fresh air to know there are still people like this in SA

  • neville.mclean - 2012-06-22 11:20

Well Done, we can only beat crime by uniting together and supporting each other. Now this is awesome news!!!! More than just prayers, its bout humanity! No need for negative comments, must be tiring to be so angry all the time!

  • Charmaine - 2012-06-22 11:22

My prayers join theirs, uniting and showing that unity is what we need in this country.

  • Ricardo January - 2012-06-22 11:28

Our country needs more cities like Delmas

  • Lindelwa - 2012-06-22 11:41

That's the way to go South Africans, we are all in this for our country and our future generations. Now, Mayor can you be exemplary and lead a clean government in your municipality. Some of these racial tensions are being flurred by this failing government. When people become desperate economically yet they see their hard earned money being wasted by corrupt politicians they look for any excuse to provide racism as a reason for any problem.

  • danamalan - 2012-06-22 11:44

Talking to yourself helps how? Seriously, how does talking to yourself help anything?

      corne.coetzee.92 - 2012-06-22 12:01

And running around, dressing up like Dracula and getting drunk does?

      neville.mclean - 2012-06-22 12:27

who is talking to themselves? regardless of whether you believe in God or not, its the meaning behind coming together and praying that is important here. The fact that black and white, regardless of class, were united, holding hands, surely sends a message that we are human beings who care for each other!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-22 14:23

Danamalan, you talk to yourself all the time. Surely you have noticed.

  • LordVaider - 2012-06-22 11:44

Some of you guys who posted on here are disgusting and should be ashamed of yourselves. Nobody irrespective of race enjoys to hear, read or see that someone has lost their lives yet you choose to sow divisions amongst the majority who want to build a united future for this country.

      colin.langley - 2012-06-22 11:50

      Amen LrodVaider!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-22 14:26

LordVaidar I can almost say the majoiry is partly to blame for the situation in this country. But where would that get me, if you are naive enough to believe that it is people here who sow division?.

  • nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-22 11:59

It's good to see this, and I support any positive steps to avoid bloodshed. Back to reality - will this solve anything? Did the murderers and rapists also attend this prayer meeting? Did they denounce violence and crime? If not, then this is nothing more than just a 'nice thing to do'. I like it, but I doubt it will solve anything.

  • Aziza - 2012-06-22 12:18

may their souls rest in peace..*prays for the family*.... now lets stop commenting about the crime and for once just once give our condolences.. tjerr!!

  • maria.silverman1 - 2012-06-22 12:57

What is it with the negative people-comments to the Delmas crowd??? Man alive, some people just loves misery! How 'bout you start making a difference in this world??? Delmas touched my heart! Well done

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-22 14:27

Maria, yes and after that your heart went quiet.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-22 14:17

Only when this sort of action happens on a continous basis across the country will peace be possible. Only when all races stand together can we build a nation.

  • zaatheist - 2012-06-22 15:12

All you guys writing and telling everyone about how you are praying are doing it wrong. Matthew 6:1- “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. - Matthew 6:6
