Cape Town - British murder accused Shrien Dewani was rushed from his Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital ward for treatment after suffering an attack, believed to have been sparked by the screeching of his hospital bed.

According to the Sunday Times, a cleaner moved his bed on Friday which caused it to squeak. Dewani “freaked”, said a hospital employee. Doctors and nurses took him away for treatment and only returned him hours later.

Police and medical staff have been monitoring Dewani around the clock through a one-way glass window in his ward, reported the newspaper.

Psychologists say however that his reaction to the noise suggests he is suffering from either depression or post-traumatic stress disorder – or possibly both. However, the Sunday Times reports that the family of Dewani’s murdered bride Annie, believe he stopped taking his medication in the UK in order to prolong his illness.

Dewani is accused of hiring hit men to kill his bride in 2010. On Tuesday he was charged with five counts relating to her murder.

The British millionaire made a 10-minute appearance in a packed Western Cape High Court room on Tuesday afternoon, where his case was postponed until 12 May.

He will remain in custody at the Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town until then.

Treatment

After his court appearance on Tuesday, the NPA said Dewani was ill and was going to the hospital for treatment, Sapa reported.

"Actually I need to emphasise and make this clear. He is not going for observation. He is going for treatment," National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Nathi Mncube said outside the Western Cape High Court.

"While he's in the care of his doctors, they will be able to give us more information in terms of his health and we will be able to make a decision going forward from there."

Dressed in a smart charcoal suit and black tie at the court appearance, he seemed to struggle to hear what was going on and sometimes winced or frowned.

At one point, he whipped his head to look around the courtroom with wide eyes.

A letter from Dewani's doctor was handed in at court, explaining that Dewani remained mentally ill and needed ongoing care.
