Cape Town - A witness was asked in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday whether he received tik (methamphetamine) from a man on trial for Anni Dewani's murder.

Xolile Mngeni's friend, 26, who may not be identified, was first asked what Mngeni's source of income was.

The witness said he thought Mngeni asked for money at home.

"Didn't he have a good supply of tik?" Mngeni's lawyer Qalisile Dayimani asked.

"No, I do not remember tik," the witness replied.

Dewani was killed in Gugulethu on November 13 2010 in an apparent hijacking while on honeymoon with her husband Shrien.

Mngeni has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Dayimani said his instruction was that the witness was provided a cut of Mngeni's supply.

The lawyer put it to the court that some of the witness and Mngeni's friends would exchange tik for cellphones.

Judge Robert Henney warned the witness that he was not compelled to answer these questions if he felt this would incriminate him.

The witness said: "I had nothing to do with that... No. There's no such thing."
The trial continues.
