Pietermaritzburg - A disabled man was robbed of R50 000 after withdrawing the cash from a bank at a Pietermaritzburg mall.

He and his neighbour had stopped at a shop in Victoria Road, Pietermaritzburg.

According to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, the 32-year-old disabled man was left sitting in the car while his neighbour went into the shop last week.

While the neighbour was inside the shop, the man, who was seated on the passenger side of the vehicle, saw a man put his hand inside the driver’s door window, said Zwane.

The robber removed the money bag containing the cash.

Zwane said the man seated in the car screamed and pressed the hooter to draw attention to what was happening. After a scuffle, the robbers took the money bag and fled.

Chase

The neighbour rushed out of the shop after hearing the noise, saw the fleeing men getting into a white Hyundai I30 car and called the police.

A short while later, members of the Pietermaritzburg organised crime unit, who were parked on the N3 near the Lion Park, spotted a vehicle fitting the description given by the neighbour and gave chase along the N3 freeway, onto the Umlaas Road offramp and along the R103 towards Umbumbulu.

The money was recovered in the car, which police believe was possibly stolen as it only had one Swaziland registration plate at the front of the vehicle and the engine and chassis numbers could not be found on the vehicle.

Nkosinathi Dlamini, 30, Wandile Dlamini, 26, Jerold Ndlovu, 25, and Mthokozisi Gumede, 40, appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court for the robbery and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
