Diver drowns at Soetwater

2011-12-11 08:28
Cape Town  - A spokesperson for the Disaster Risk Management Centre, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says Clinton Koopman, 26, of Athlone has died apparently while diving at the Soetwater Resort.

Solomons-Johannes said that the centre had been informed of a near drowning incident after Koopman apparently showed signs of distress on Saturday afternoon.

Local volunteers of the Disaster Risk Management Centre as well as paramedics and the Cape Medical Response were dispatched.
Upon arrival Koopman's body had already been recovered by other divers and family members.
Koopman had been wearing diving equipment and had carried a special bag to carry crayfish.

Soetwater is a coastal resort that occupies a narrow strip of land between Kommetjie and Misty Cliffs.

Dense kelp beds line the shore, so crayfish divers as well as hoop-net fishers operating from small dinghies are often seen in the area during the crayfish season.

The police have opened a docket.
