Cape Town - Residents from the Western Cape township of Du Noon went on the rampage in protest at service delivery woes on Friday.

One witness said there were as many as 3 000 protesters while another claimed it was closer to 5 000.

Shacks were set alight and stones were thrown at vehicles on the N7 highway which had to be closed for several hours. It has reportedly been opened again.

Some residents say they are sending a decisive message to the city officials that they are tired of poor services, Eyewitness News reported.

The group plans to march to the municipal offices in Milnerton, where they plan to hand over a memorandum.
