Johannesburg - A doctor says he will start to awaken a severely burned 3-year-old girl a week after he transplanted cloned skin onto her body.

Dr Ridwan Mia said on Monday that he will begin decreasing Pippie Kruger's sedatives on Tuesday morning and hopes that she will be fully awake, for the first time since last Monday's surgery.

Isabella suffered severe burns to more than 80% of her body after an accident at a family braai.

Mia says that doctors will begin removing bandages on Monday to see whether the new skin has taken. Mia says he has been "happy with her progress".

The procedure has been used in the US and Europe but rarely in Africa.
