Doctor up for R700 000 fraud

2012-05-22 18:36

Pretoria - A doctor accused of defrauding the Compensation Fund appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday.

The trial of Tebogo Ephraim Kaeletsa was postponed to 23 July at the request of prosecutor Margaret Thulare, who was not feeling well, the labour department said in a statement.

Kaeletsa, of Pampierstad Haitswater, Northern Cape, was arrested in August 2010 and charged with defrauding the fund out of almost R700 000.

Magistrate Dawie Jacobs extended his bail of R5 000.

In January, the matter was postponed because Kaeletsa had not paid for his legal representation.

"We are unable to represent the accused today [Tuesday]," Kaeletsa's lawyer, Samuel Molele, told the court at the time.

"He has had cash flow problems at his surgery, but is now employed in public practice at a hospital and earns a salary, which he will use to pay for his legal representation," said Molele.

The doctor allegedly submitted claim forms to the Compensation Fund for patients he had never treated.

The Compensation Fund is a public entity of the department of labour whose function is to cover for compensation of workers injured during work or for diseases contracted.

Two former employees of the labour department appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday facing charges of swindling millions from the fund.

The case against Maxwell Ramaphosa and Samuel Mfeleng, both aged 36, was postponed to 17 July.

The pair face 15 counts of fraud and 26 counts of money laundering.

Magistrate Fikile Ntlati extended their bail of R3 000 each. Both are residents of Soshanguve, in Pretoria.
