Cape Town - A year-old Ridgeback dog is recovering in the Knysna Veterinary Clinic after allegedly being dragged behind a sports car last week, according to reports.

The Knysna-Plett Herald reported that the community of Brenton-on-Lake was in shock after the dog was dragged on a leash behind the car in an apparent fit of anger last Thursday.

The dog is believed to have escaped from his property and was being punished.

Three people who witnessed the incident laid a charge against the well-known resident at the Knysna police station, and also reported him to Knysna Animal Welfare.

The traumatised witnesses reportedly surrounded the car, forcing the driver to come to a stop. The dog apparently suffered a ruptured diaphragm and damage to her paws.

The Cape Times reported on Tuesday that the dog, named Gina, had surgery on Thursday and was recovering.

The police and Knysna Animal Welfare are reportedly waiting for statements from the witnesses.

No arrests have yet been made, according to a Western Cape police spokesperson.
