Johannesburg - A dog has led people searching for a missing relative to the spot where he drowned in the Orange River, near Prieska, Northern Cape police said on Monday.
Lieutenant-Colonel Hendrik Swart said Willem Pretorius, 26, was thought to have gone to the river to wash himself at 17:00 on Friday.
"He was only accompanied by a small dog. After a while the dog came home with the T-shirt of the victim in its mouth," said Swart.
When the dog led Pretorius's relatives to a spot on the river banks, they suspected that he had drowned, he said.
Police divers from Upington recovered Pretorius's body on Saturday.
