Dog stabbed, left to die in PE

2011-10-26 08:05

Port Elizabeth - The search is on for the person who half-strangled a dog, sliced it open with a panga, broke its legs and left it for dead, according to a newspaper report on Wednesday.

The dog was found lying helplessly in a bog of mud and sewage effluent, its gaping wound infested with maggots, near Missionvale Primary School, Port Elizabeth, the Herald reported.

Patricia Vilane, 52, was walking home when she heard a whining sound.

“I saw the dog and at first thought it was dead. Then it lifted its head and it looked at me, as if it was asking for help.

“There was a thin string that was pulled tight around its neck. It was not like what you would use to take the dog for a walk. It was like someone tried to strangle it, but God did not allow it. Its nose was bleeding, and it could not walk."

Put down

Vilane called the Animal Anti-Cruelty League for help.

League volunteer Karien van Schalkwyk said she had been working in the field for three years and had dealt with some terrible cases.

“But this one broke my heart.

“The dog had what looked to me like a panga wound on its one side. It must have been lying there for some time because the maggots were starting to eat the wound.”

The league vet who examined the dog established that at least one leg was broken or dislocated but it appeared the others might also have been broken as it was totally unable to stand, she said.

"It was anyway so far gone that nothing could be done to help it, so it was put down," she said.

The league has offered a R200 reward for any information that would lead them being able to find and charge the culprit, she said.

"A person capable of this is just as capable of raping or murdering a human, which is why the community needs to come together to identify and punish [this person].”

Burn in hell you who did this to a defenceless animal. All that a dog asks for is to be loved and all it gives is love. I sincerely hope suffer the same fate before you die

      Shelley - 2011-10-26 08:20

The dog is not the animal in this story.

      Ettienne - 2011-10-26 09:14

The SAPS need to do their work. Surely there must be some witness/es! I hope this person/s who did this if found, are also slashed with a panga, have their arms and legs broken and have string tied around their necks! It is a damn shame that the Animal Cruelty Organization has to make an offer of financial reward. There should be no financial reward for things like this. In the end people will only come forward if money is offered. I hope that dog survives and recovers!

      Marion - 2011-10-26 09:38

@Ettienne they couldn't save the dog. It was put down.

      Ettienne - 2011-10-26 09:48

@ Marion. Sorry, missed that part. Was so the hell in I could take that person apart myself!

      rbphiri - 2011-10-26 10:07

This really REALLY REALLY ANGERED me!!! If it were up to me I would beat the sh*t out of that person, inflict the same damage and than hand him over to the SPCA and set the dogs loose on them. Such acts of savagery are also patterns of signs of a potential serial killer...in most cases serial killers start off by inflicting pain on animals.

      Ann - 2011-10-26 11:02

This is absolutely shocking. I really hope that the person or people to blame for this is found and pays dearly for such cruelty to an innocent animal. It seems as though satan is on the loose in our country!

      Jozan - 2011-10-26 11:27

      Ditto!

      Tiggy.deOliveira - 2011-10-26 14:11

Unfortunately there isn't a decent justice system in this country. Especially when it comes to animal cruelty. I'm guessing the perpetrator will get six months max. Don't know what needs to be done to change this....

  • Tennille - 2011-10-26 08:17

So many horrific stories of animal cruelty lately, you have to pretty barbaric to do something like this. This is a clear sign of very sick and twisted mind and the person should be removed from society, because if you can bring yourself to do this to a defenseless animal you are pretty much capable of anything. People suck.

  • Thulebona - 2011-10-26 08:19

This is just insane... as insane as the R200 reward...

      Smoke.ZN - 2011-10-26 08:25

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League is a non profit organisation. What they are doing is giving away what little funds they have. It is a commendable act. Dont be an idiot by saying the reward is basically worthless.

      Sharon - 2011-10-26 08:32

People will sell their Mothers for R10.00 for drugs, so hopefully some one will come forward for his own greed and this person can be caught. This is a very sick sh*t

      npretorius2 - 2011-10-26 08:33

Missionvale in PE is a very very poor area, and that R200 might be enough to get someone to point out the responsible person, but not enough to get the whole community falsely accusing each other just for the reward.

      Ann - 2011-10-26 11:07

Thulebona - from all your postings throughout many of the News24 articles you always manage to offend. Perhaps you should seriously think before you place your hands on the keyboard - think clearly if what you say will be offensive and perhaps hurt anyone. If the answer to that question is "yes" or "maybe" perhaps you should rethink or just not post anything!

  • koo.doyle - 2011-10-26 08:20

I will happily add another R500 to the reward, to see this despicable waste of skin named and shamed, and brought to book.

      Kala - 2011-10-26 09:18

I'll add R500.00 to that too

      Gerald - 2011-10-26 11:01

So will I but I want 10 minutes with the culprit

      Godesha - 2011-10-26 14:15

@Gerald. You can have him/her or what is left of the culprit once I am done. I would love to rip him/her apart with my bare hands.

      sharon.artz - 2011-10-27 12:12

i will add another R200. I often help out in these areas in PE. Most of the cases you see is not pure neglect, but a lack of resouces to care for an animal properly, but with the good comes the bad. It breaks your heart to see animals that have been broken by humans and left to suffer.

  • Harald - 2011-10-26 08:23

God, teach those who need to be taught, before I do....

  • Sattva - 2011-10-26 08:24

and when you find that person, please ensure that you do to him exactly the same thing.

  • Craig - 2011-10-26 08:26

I could easily do the same to the scumbag for such creulty. The thought of slicing him/her open and systematically breaking their arms and legs fills me with a grim satisfaction. make it long and painful. Hope the bastard gets hit and dragged by a car.

  • Ian - 2011-10-26 08:28

you stinking bastard, omg do i hate people, looking so forward to moving on, please God do not send me back here, hope the mayans got 2012 right, stuff this

      christo.stone - 2011-10-26 08:42

Sadly, I agree with you. The world is sick...humans are a sick, sick being...

      Ann - 2011-10-26 12:02

Ian - the idea behind 2012 is to start bringing genuine peace to earth. That is why so many of these heinous deeds are being exposed now whether they be cruelty, fraud, corruption, evil and so on. I just hope that I can be around when earth really does accept the spiritual peace that is intended to be ours. This is why as many people as possible really need to raise our vibrations and believe that all these things will be exposed. It is a cleansing of sorts and needs participation on a large scale. Raising our vibrations involves meditation and prayer and a belief system in the good that is intended for us by God.

  • michelle.e.magson - 2011-10-26 08:38

this person takes evil to a whole new level, but sadly if caught the fine will not equate to suitable punishment. equal suffering would be too good even. locked away would be great, with a sentence imposed that would have been given were it a human being tortured in this same way.

      justindeklerk - 2011-10-26 09:09

Our esteemed government won't waste their money on justice for an animal, most of them couldn't give a toss about animals. They hardly care much for people, other than those that enrich them personally! This guy will get community service or a small fine at worst, if the neanderthal is caught!

  • Steve - 2011-10-26 08:44

I say give bank account details for a reward fund.... fidn the person who did this and prosecute to the full extent of the animal anti cruelty laws! R200? Im sure 90% of the people who read this article will match that!

      Stephanie - 2011-10-26 08:59

I agree 100%. this sick bastard needs to brought to justice. It makes me furious that our laws do not cover animals adequately. Sick to death of human cruelty

      koo.doyle - 2011-10-26 09:48

Brilliant idea Steve! Perhaps mail the league and ask them how best to proceed? I will commit to R500.

  • hannet.breitenbach - 2011-10-26 08:45

R200 reward, now that is insulting. What this animal had to endure is worth more than that. This is a shame that people can do this to an animal. Just because animals cant speak doesnt mean they can feel!

      koo.doyle - 2011-10-26 09:50

R200 for an organisation that battles to even feed and shelter its animals? Don't be so quick to judge. A few of us have said we will add to the reward, why don't you do the same?

  • slade.francis - 2011-10-26 08:49

God is looking down on earth & thinking "I had so much hope for them, what a mess I need to end this soon"

      Wanda - 2011-10-26 08:52

amen to that Slade..human race have no regard for any form of life it appears...GOD HELP US ALL....

  • Thelma - 2011-10-26 08:57

This is getting way out of control but in saying that our country is out of control!!!! I wish the delinquent who done this to that poor animal burns in hell.

  • lee.ferreira - 2011-10-26 08:58

I will give R200.00 towards this reward, please God let them find the bastard and give him an equally slow and painful death!!

  • Clayton - 2011-10-26 08:58

Ill add to that reward , some mob justice is in order

      Brad Frank - 2011-10-26 09:22

completely agree! I'm SO joining that mob

  • Jen - 2011-10-26 08:58

I cannot believe the way some humans live! What posses people ti hurt animals and each other?

  • Megan - 2011-10-26 08:59

What an awful story, human cruelty never fails to amaze me. We have a lot to answer for thats for sure. A R200 reward, come on please - cant someone offer a bit more it might make it more of an incentive!

  • Hermann - 2011-10-26 09:03

Even the death penalty will be to gentle for maggot who did it.

  • Candice - 2011-10-26 09:04

Mahatma Gandhi said: “You can judge a nation by the way they treat their animals”. This absolutely breaks my heart :( My fiance' drove past kids who'd caught a guinea fowl and were tearing it's wings off whilst the bird was still alive!! Who does that??? I feel nothing for people who "torture" innocent animals for "fun"! Sickening.

  • derrick.dawson - 2011-10-26 09:11

Sick. I would love to get my hands on that "person"

  • Rosalind - 2011-10-26 09:23

This is the email i sent to Mr Glen Truscott at the P.E anti cruelty league Dear Glen In light of the story published on News24 http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Dog-stabbed-left-to-die-in-PE-20111026 I want to bring to your attention the comments at the end of the article from concerned citizens. They would like to add to your reward offered to catch this scumbag. So please if possible, furnish us with you details...

      Kala - 2011-10-26 09:49

Cool - Keep us posted. Although donations can me made at any SPCA branch country wide. It might not be used specifically for this reward but will go a long way to helping other animals.

A DOG'S PRAYER Treat me kindlymy beloved master for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me Do not break my spirit with a stick for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have e do Speak to me often, for your voice is worlds sweetest music as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal no longer used to bitter elements And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.Though had you no home I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper Keep my pan filled with fresh water for although I should not reproach you were it dry,I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.Feed me clean food so that I may stay well to romp and play and do your bidding,to walk by your side, and stand ready willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight do not turn me away from you.Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I draw,my fate was every safest in your hands Beth Norman Haris

      Gerda - 2011-10-26 10:18

You have me totally in tears with this wonderful poem.I once rescued a Dalmation which was wondering around at a taxi rank - someone had stabbed him numerous times with a knive. not once did he make a sound even whilst in pain.

      braamc - 2011-10-26 14:57

      Gorgeous, thank you

  • Genna - 2011-10-26 09:34

This MF deserves the worst possible punishment possible. I pray God deals with him in ways we can only imagine so that justice may be served. Though it will not take away the suffering this animal endured. I am sorry we live in a world of such evil, it breaks my heart.

  • Deborah - 2011-10-26 09:39

This country had better put its act together with harsher sentences for animal cruelty. There is far too much cruelty going on and not many people give a damn. Very sad!!!!!

  • Craig - 2011-10-26 09:43

    Savages !!!!!

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2011-10-26 09:45

One can often judge a person's character by the way he treats his/her pets.

  • Marion - 2011-10-26 09:47

... and they start their murderous careers by practicing on helpless animals then they move onto human beings ... There is no word to describe how I feel about someone who can do this to an animal... just this morning my dogs each brought a dead baby bird to me and the sadness I felt when I realized they could not be helped was immediately replaced by absolute anger and revulsion when I read this article. Thank you AACL for always being there for animals in need. You are the only welfare organisation I have encountered that actually removes and rescues animals and THEN issues warnings etc. You have never once said 'we can't do that' when I have called on you to help animals in need. Some other organisations have. Therefore I will always offer any financial support for animals to AACL and not the others who did not come to the aid of animals that subsequently died before I discovered AACL.

  • Marc - 2011-10-26 09:54

A person capable of this is just as capable of raping or murdering a human, which is why the community needs to come together to identify and punish [this person].” Wrong. That is not the reason that this sort of crime has to be stamped out in the most ruthless and decisive manner. The reason is that it is evil and cruel in and of itself. PE: Take care of this. Find the culprit and kill it. Do a Gadaffi on the culprit. Forget the "authorities" - they are worse than useless in matters such as this.

  • Linda - 2011-10-26 09:59

I was sick to my stomach just reading that somebody could be so heartless as to continue to abuse the animal whilst it cried out in pain. Unfortunately, the entire fabric of society has broken down because people breed like rats and then leave their babies to die. If their babies do survive - they live a life of abject poverty without ever enjoying a property family life where they are taught right from wrong and unconditional love. People are so filled with rage that this is the result. We need to follow China's policy of only 1 child and maybe we have a chance of raising decent human beings who have respect for others - including defenceless animals. If the culprit is ever found - I will happily volunteer to mete out the same punishment to him - slowly over several days......and video it and post on you tube as a warning to any other sadists who think it is fun to torture anyone weaker than them.

  • Cathandra - 2011-10-26 10:05

Guys what has happened to this dog is attrotious, but as the article mentions if someone out there is capible of this, what are they not capible of. There are direct links between animal creulty and becoming a full blown PYHCOPATH who is capiable of even worse thinks to some unsuspecting person, if not stopped soon.

  • ana.curcic - 2011-10-26 10:20

May God punish that person in the same way. Y do not deserve to walk this earth.

  • Michelle - 2011-10-26 10:31

Hope this beast is found and culled!!!

  • wardah.ruiters - 2011-10-26 10:35

iv heard of some bad things in my life and heartless people....but this....this is on another level of being evil and cruel....how does thes people live with themeselfs regardless of what that poor dog did nothing deserves that kind of treatment....im not one to wish bad things onto to people but i truly hope thes people rot in hell and get evrything thats coming to them!!!!this truely brought tears to my eyes....something should be done!!!!

  • Nicolette - 2011-10-26 10:37

Why attack defenceless animals? They are brought in this world to give love and the undying love and loyalty that an animal gives to its owner is found now where else in no one else. It breaks my heart to know that there is so many animals out there who just wants love and is abused because it makes its abuser feel powerfull. Each and every animal born must be registered (like RICA / FIKA) and if the owner cant afford to care for a animal it must be placed by those who can and nutered so no unwanted animals in that family suffers.

  • Anso - 2011-10-26 10:44

A truly sick bastard, if he/she can do this to an animal, he can do it a human. Still say "There is a special place in HELL for YOU"

  • Christie - 2011-10-26 11:34

I am so in on the contribution to the reward, but need to ask that once they get found out, to release a picture of them to the public...may that dog rest in peace, and may that sinfull bastard have itchy balls and knifes as fingers... I have faith that the person will get what he/she/they deserve.

  • jacques.buckle - 2011-10-26 12:11

why arnt these kind of people not my neighbour? boeta ek sal so persoon slag

  • Masego - 2011-10-26 12:13

some people are evil, what goes through a person's mind to do such a horroble horroble thing like this

  • VOVO247 - 2011-10-26 12:45

The sad part to this is that a dog brought up by a good owner, with just the very basic care & balanced love, & allowed to live a happy life, is more loyal than most people you class as friends. That dog will die for you, without a single question asked.

  • Tennille - 2011-10-26 12:51

While it is commendable that many of you are willing to contribute to the reward to catch this guy, it would be even better if you make a small monthly donation to an animal charity of your choice to help with the daily feeding and care of animals. But the best best thing you could do to help these organisations is to adopt a pet and not to buy. Shouting from the bleachers when something like this happens does not change the fate of MILLIONS of animals, only actions do.

      koo.doyle - 2011-10-26 14:12

All my animals are adopted, and I do donate every month to animal charities. The point of adding to the reward, is to ensure this savage doesn't harm any more animals.

      nicolettewill - 2011-10-26 16:34

So true - even just R50 per month is enough if 1000 people do it. So many societies have to focus their attention on fundraising when they should be out there focusing on the cruelty. We could make their work a lot easier. These days it is so easy to set up a monthly debit order via EFT...

  • Tennille - 2011-10-26 12:55

For those of you upset about this story, please also follow the one about Stefan Keyter who shot a Staffie and then strung it up to die. And then sign the petition, you can get more information from www.barkingmad.co.za Sadly many stories like these never even make the news.

Awwww this world we live in is really sick isn't it. How sad when a pet like a dog can be a mans best friend and yet so many find it easy to be so cruel to them knowing they cannot speak or cry for help. I can't say anything more but sob reading something like this.

  • Alva - 2011-10-26 14:07

Not even an animal inflicts such cruelty. This is the work of a barbaric savage!

I offer R1000.00 reward to find the person who did this act to be dragged into a court of law.Such a person cannot walk in any community with the knowledge that this act is acceptable in any form.We are meant to be in a humane society however ,hung drawn and quartered would be a fitting punishment!
