Johannesburg - A total of 62 dogs were removed from an illegal dog breeder in Wolmaransstad, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in the North West said on Thursday.

German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Jack Russells and Boerboels were among some of the dogs found locked in small cages on the premises on Wednesday, Jaco Pieterse said.

"Four pigs and a tortoise were also seized in terms of the warrant and were taken to safety at an undisclosed SPCA."

Pieterse said the animals were kept in dirty and parasitic conditions. Some did not have access to clean drinking water.

He said the SPCA was dealing with the problem of "backyard" breeding which was fuelled by "animal-brokering".

Pieterse said this was when an individual placed an advert to sell an animal and insisted on delivering it to the buyer.

"This means that anyone buying an animal in this way has no access to the manner in which they were bred... people must ask to see the conditions in which animals are raised."

The SPCA said it would lay criminal charges against the owner of the animals in terms of the Animals Protection Act.
