Johannesburg - Two expatriate South Africans, including a toddler, were killed in a fire at an upmarket shopping centre in Doha, Qatar, which claimed 19 lives, the international relations department confirmed on Tuesday.

"The two [South Africans were] a 28-year-old female teacher who worked at the mall’s day care centre and an 18-month-old toddler who was at the day care centre," said spokesperson Nelson Kgwete in a statement.

The South African embassy in Doha were in contact with the families of the deceased, named earlier by The Star as Shameega Charles and Umar Emeran.

"The South African government would like to express its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Qatar, and especially the families of the deceased..." Kgwete said.

Associated Press reported that the fire broke out in a crèche at the Villaggio Mall.

Thirteen children were among those killed.
