Dominee's wife allegedly steals R6.3m

2012-06-09 10:49

Johannesburg - The wife of a Centurion NG Church minister has appeared in court for allegedly stealing R6.3m from her workplace, Beeld reported on Saturday.

Anchen Lindeque, 36, appeared in the Pretoria Commercial Court on Friday on a theft charge.

Lindeque, a qualified lawyer, was arrested in October 2011 after R6 259 241.66 disappeared from a law firm where she was employed.

She was a co-director as well as in charge of bookkeeping and financial management at the firm at the time she is alleged to have siphoned the money out of the firm's trust account into various other accounts.

The money transfers took place between 2008 and 2009.

She allegedly covered her tracks by creating false journal entries.

Lindeque, a mother of four, is expected to enter her plea when court proceedings resume in August.

She is currently out on bail of R5 000.

      Janice - 2012-06-09 10:59

She stole OVER 6 million, and shes out of R5000 bail????? Ridiculous!!!

      Matthew Patrick - 2012-06-09 11:00

Rapists get R1,000 so why not.

      adrien.mcguire - 2012-06-09 11:04

@Janice Bail has nothing to do with the crime. The amount of bail is directly linked to the probability that the offender will appear in court to face charges, or to flee from justice. If the judge considers that the flight risk is too high he will deny bail. This is a consistant mistake made by bloggers on these sites.

      Ec - 2012-06-09 11:31

So, Anrien, if Bail has nothing to do with the crime, and the amount of bail is directly linked to the probability that the offender will appear in court to face charges, or to flee from justice - should we then presume that there is a 5x more likeliness that the rapist will appear in court without fleeing, than the person who stole money? :-))

      melania.nel - 2012-06-09 11:45

Yet she hasn't escaped within the 3 years after the money was stolen.... Now she's a flight risk... Smart reporting... Is Dominee even an English word? News24 broadens my knowledge. Pretty soon I shall be able to walk into parliament fully qualified.

      adrien.mcguire - 2012-06-09 12:05

@ ec.dp.9 I get your point, and it is valid! However if you google "bail" and look at it's origins, you will see where I got the info. Unfortunately, most people consider the amount of bail, either by the crime and/or their own belief in the guilt or innocence of the person accused. Just saying!

      dawood.timol - 2012-06-09 12:08

the amazing thing is that certain races, ethnicities and groups make the headlines daily, when these sought of stories appear in the mainline media.news24 is culpable in this racist targeting. Certain ethnicities in SA and the rest of the world are protected although they are involved in mass fraud and theft. But i guess thats how the world revolves.Unfortunately the Afrikaner nation are now the sitting ducks of the nation, after they have been used during the apartheid years as a front for corruption, racism, economic terrorism and other horrendous crimes that they have been made out to commit themselves. There were definitely bigger forces in the backgroung whom enjoyed the sunshine while the Afrikaner was made out to be the police of SA. But the lady in question is innocent until proven guilty. So give her the benefit of the doubt. And if found guilty, then she should face the full might of the justice department.

      Ec - 2012-06-09 12:22

Thank you for your well constructed reply, Adrien. My I say, that I agree with your logic, but have unfortunately many a time observed how what is supposed to happen in "Theory" differs completely from what happens in "practice". All said in good spirit though.

      Omo - 2012-06-09 12:29

dawood.timol...Hmmm as per your logic fraud cases involving Afrikaner crimnals/white criminals should not be reported in the media just because they are white? So as per your supreme style of reasoning ,criminals who are white should be sheilded from the media and the masses. Why stop there? You might as well say criminals who are Afrikaners should not serve any jail time! FYI visit the SAPS website and click on the commerical crimes link.90% of the criminal wanted or on trial for fraud in SA are caucasians and of Afrikaner extract. What you do you have to say about that?So the Afrikaner who conned his fellow Afrikaners in to buy illegal land in mozambique scamming them out of ten of millions with the help of pam golding should not have been reported too? Now here is a fact for you: White South Africans are more likely to commit fraud in the private sector than any other race followed by indians and then followed by blacks.

      annemarie.v.vuuren - 2012-06-09 12:35

@ melania.nel : Do'nt think that "Dominee" is an English word at all. This is just another form of discrimination and to, once more, try to belittle the Afrikaner. Just my two cents.....

      tebogo.maja.77 - 2012-06-09 22:29

Only in South Africa!, lol. Stealing 6Mil and getting 5k Bail, lol.

      Squeegee - 2012-06-10 07:35

The trolls are out tonight. Why does News24 not publish the church/religious affiliation and spousal occupation of all alleged criminals? Imagine: "The husband of a Muslim cook stole..." or " woman caught speeding is married to a Hindu doctor". Then we could all go on line and attack Muslims or Hindus or cooks or doctors... Senseless. Just like this article.

      Zion - 2012-06-10 17:11

Yes Melanie Nel the word is derived from English and Scottish. The correct spelling is Dominie and in the US it is used for any minister. (Colliers Dictionary)

      zaatheist - 2012-06-09 14:56

Poor article out to get some attention. She stole it, not the "dominee". How's this got anything to do with the NG church in general. Guess what, there are bad people out there doing bad things. At work, at schools, at hospitals, at home, and yes, even in Churches... The put the "NG Dominee's wife" part in so that all us saps would read it...

      arne.verhoef - 2012-06-09 11:13

Crime is crime, whether committed by black, white, coloured or indian. We must just condemn it instead of playing race cards. We are all affected by crime. Let's fight crime together and stop being racist. We have read stories of priest from different religions raping, stealing and doing all the wrong things. This is not the first incident involving religious people and neither will it be the last. The church belongs to God but the problem is that it is attended by people who bare not immune to sin.

Such a big discussion about fraud (which I agree is criminal) but is it not amazing that you get a harsher sentence for fraud than if you were to take someones life? So in in affect our justice system is saying don't steal (even though our leaders are unable to be an example of honesty and integrity) but its better to murder woman, children and their fathers for no apparent reason. For that you get a warning and a "now. don't do it again." speech from the judge and you are out on bail to do the same again in about 2 to 5 years. We have a twisted legal system that works for government and its leaders but it has done nothing to keep our society safe from murderers, rapist as well as a corrupt society and government officials.
