Dozens down with food poisoning - report

2011-01-09 18:45

Cape Town - Dozens of people have been admitted to a hospital in Cape's Town's Strand area for food poisoning, EWN reports.

Disaster management’s Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said they were not sure how widespread or severe the outbreak was.

“Disaster management has just been alerted that 25 people have been reported for food poisoning,” he said. “We have activated the provincial ambulance services…to the scene to determine the cause.”

EWN said emergency personnel were currently treating the affected people in Lwandle near Strand. Authorities said nearly 100 people were affected by the food poisoning.

It is understood that residents ate food that expired in 2007.

It's claimed that the food was distributed to the area on Saturday night by a local businessman.

Listen JM, when I was in grade 2 at school I believed the story about the cow jumping over the moon. Fortunately I went a few steps further and today I can say that what you're saying falls in the same category of stories. Maybe you got stuck?

I saw the news on TV last night and it appeared that someone (possibly from Sun City) had a quantity of dried goods which were past their use by date to get rid of. This was stuff that looked like pasta and rice and stuff. There may have been tinned stuff as well which wasn't shown. Could pasta which had egg as an ingredient possibly cause food poisoning? Anyway the dumping was done somewher near an informal settlement and the inhabitants took it and used it with result of food poisoning. Irresponsible dumping of food YOU wouldn't use but thought might still be okay for others? Waste not want not.? Noone has died so far but good thing it has been reported as source now knows that food past due date should be destroyed and not dumped where humans can find and use it.
