Johannesburg - A man and his 11-year-old son were killed and three people injured while they were watching illegal drag racing in Woodmead drive in Sandton on Thursday night, ER24 said.
Spokesperson Nick Dollman said there were about 500 people standing on the middle island in the road, watching the racing when the accident happened at about midnight on Thursday.
According to witnesses there was no race on at the time of the accident but one of the drivers in a Golf reversed across Woodmead drive without looking and an oncoming Toyota Corolla had to swerve to avoid a collision.
"The driver of the Toyota lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two vehicles that were parked in the middle island. The Toyota also collided with four spectators who were standing next to the parked cars," said Dollman.
The 35-year-old man and his son died from massive blunt trauma.
The Toyota stopped more than 100m from the accident and the driver fled the scene.
The driver of the Golf also fled the scene. The mob then assaulted a man who was believed to be a passenger in the Golf.
Dollman said people also shot at the Toyota. The driver of the Toyota was later found and brought back to the scene.
Three injured people were taken to hospital.
The metro police accident investigation unit was investigating.
