JOhannesburg - Fifty-five motorists were arrested in Mthatha on Sunday in a crackdown on drunken drivers, Eastern Cape police said.
The operation began around midnight and ended at 07:00.
During the operation 55 drivers were arrested for drunken driving and a shebeen owner was arrested for selling liquor without a licence, said spokesperson Muzikisi Fatyela.
"The drivers were arrested on the road after they were found driving under the influence of alcohol.
"The 39-year-old woman failed to produce a licence for the tavern, so we arrested her and closed the tavern," said Fatyela.
The drivers were charged with drinking and driving. The woman was charged with failing to comply with the liquor act.
All of the arrested are expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Monday.
