Driver crams 45 children into 14-seater
Johannesburg - A 31-year-old taxi driver was arrested for loading 45 school children into a 14-seater taxi on Monday outside Phokeng, said the North West department of public safety.
The driver was transporting the children from Boshoek Primary School to Phokeng when he was stopped by traffic officers from the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit, department spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said in a statement.
Earlier on Monday, the same driver was issued with a ticket for driving a taxi without an operating licence.
Kgwele said traffic officers had to ask for the assistance of the Bafokeng Taxi Association to ensure the children were taken home after the taxi was impounded.
The phenomenon of overloading of scholars and illegal operations has resulted in untold misery of loss of lives in road accidents and conflicts among taxi operators," said acting public safety MEC Dr Magome Masike.
"The proactive operations across the province are intended to prevent incidents and accidents that can be caused by overloaded taxis," he said.
