Driver escapes, passengers burn to death

2012-06-30 11:02

Johannesburg - Three people were burnt to death when their car and a truck collided head-on, on the N1, 30km from Bloemfontein, early on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

"Common cause information suggests that an errant party veered from their allocated lane and pushed into oncoming traffic," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

The vehicles collided head-on and the car burst into flames.

When paramedics arrived on the scene the car's driver, who sustained serious injuries, had climbed out of his vehicle.

Three people were trapped inside, burnt beyond recognition, and declared dead on the scene.

Wicks said the car and truck drivers were stabilised on the scene and taken to Pelonomi Hospital.

I will guess what I saw many times: Truck driver farigue. There is no national control over this, although all the means exist to implement management systems. As long as we have this obsession with making money from speed, we will never see the end of these road horrors. Condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.

Truck drivers are somehw ignorant on the road, especialy at night, with their very bright lights, they dont even 'dim' for small cars. In some other countries, they dont allow trucks to travel at nite in certain roads

Many many years ago there was a law where no trucks were allowed to travel on the roads between Friday and Sunday which prevented a lot of accidents involving trucks.
