Driver gets R80 000 bail in jogger case

2011-10-28 14:18

Pretoria - A man accused of killing five joggers when he crashed into them while driving drunk was granted R80 000 bail in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Sibusiso Langa, 43, faces five charges of murder, one of attempted murder, and one of drunken driving.

One of the conditions of Langa's bail is that he is not allowed to drive while out on bail.

Langa was allegedly drunk when he drove into the joggers on October 23.

Four women and a man were killed. Another man was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.

The runners were preparing for the Soweto Marathon when they were hit by Langa driving a Mercedes Benz ML500.

This is just another SA incident. No wonder everybody in other countries all think our country is "DANGEROUS, there's a lot of murderers".

  • Kate - 2011-10-28 15:30

His bail amount is fair and the conditions are too. Let this be a message to all you people who drink and drive.

  • Klem - 2011-10-28 15:35

Whats R80,000 to him - he drives a 500 merc - Thats the cost to fill he tank - Killer

  • miskagovender - 2011-10-28 15:46

R80 000 will never come close to those 5 innocent joggers whose lives where taken away soo tragically. I do hope he gets a harsher sentence cos doesnt seem like the bail amount was harsh enough.

  • William - 2011-10-28 16:00

he should not have even been given bail, he should stay in prison like the drunken driving pest he is!!!!

  • Linda - 2011-10-28 16:10

The constitution states that we are all equal before the law - except that the rich get to pay to stay out of prison - so how is that equal? He should remain in jail until his trial - exactly as someone who cant afford the bail money would have to do - but he should have to pay the state for the cost of his imprisonment so that he isnt a burden on the taxpayers. I also believe that there should be no option of a fine in lieu of a prison sentence, because this also prejudices those who cannot afford to pay - and again, proves that the rich get beneficial treatment.

      Mike - 2011-10-28 16:18

Baseless assertion Linda, sounds like a conspiracy in the making!

  • Nick - 2011-10-28 16:19

Being an attorney, I'm at a loss for words as to how a prosecutor could have possibly allowed this clown bail!! And of such a little amount! Considering his apparent means, driving an ML500 for example, he should have paid vastly more money! And what's to stop him from driving again? A slap on the wrists by the prosecutor? Please...

  • ian.bosch - 2011-10-28 16:32

drunk whilst on the gravy train with his ml500????

  • Marie - 2011-10-28 17:33

Taking away the death penalty or any penalty for breaking the law is what has caused this country to be in such a state! The people doing the crimes don't care BECAUSE they know NOTHING will happen. THEIR rights are so much more important than the lives of the victims. All the current government can do is....shrug their shoulders, stick their heads in the sand, collect more money for their salaries and ridiculous trips from the few taxpayers and blame it on apartheid..... GET OVER IT!!! THE ANC has been in power for how many years now? We are going BACKWARDS not forwards.

  • markwmilligan - 2011-10-28 18:03

I cant believe this dirt bag actually got bail.

  • lasherza - 2011-10-28 18:43

  • mikuyu - 2011-10-29 09:42

like bees he will pay a fine n a suspended sentence.

      Johann - 2011-10-29 10:19

Now that you mention it mikuyu, I can also see the simalarity, Bees felt threatend by the cops and feared for his safty ,the same with the drunk driver , he felt threatend by these joggers and ran them over before they could harm him .

  • Gail - 2011-10-29 11:50

Justice is not about revenge, it is about appropriate punishment and making the person take full responsibility for what he did. Why was he not made to surrender his American passport as well as pay bail? My African lodger tells me that under customary law he has to kill one cow as penitience for spilling the blood of 5 people. Thereafter his family and elders and he himself have to approach the elders of all the victim's families and offer reparation which is decided by the elders and should they opt for money then his lawyer and the families of the victims can approach the judge/magistrate and request the agreed upon amount (a la Bees Roux). It is then up to the judge's discretion as to what other punishment he should be made to pay.i.e. banned from driving for life which as my lodger says the law cannot and will not enforce. He can be placed under house arrest plus no driving etc. Whether this is what will happen remains to be seen as the minister wants him charged with murder. He may well be a skilled person and we need skilled people and he may be a first time offender. That is the only mitigating circumstances in this terrible accident. Chopping off his head won't bring back the victims no matter how angry we all feel about this and even removing his licence for life won't prevent him driving again as there are many unfit drivers on our unfit roads with too few honest cops.

      Mike - 2011-10-29 14:33

Thank you Gail for a sensible post!

  • Leendert - 2011-10-29 14:43

Those 5 people got NO notice to have their life taken away from them, so Mr Langa does not deserve any notice himself. Bail denied. See you in 25 years (preferably never).

  • Dianne - 2011-10-29 14:49

I hope they also confiscated his extremely expensive vehicle which is worth a lot more than that. Personally I think that for this kind of crime there should be no bail. Lock him up and throw away the key. It should be like jail in China where your friends have to bring you food otherwise you starve.
