Johannesburg - A driver was killed when he crashed into a concrete pillar on the N1 south highway in Florida Glen, Roodepoort, paramedics said on Tuesday.

"A witness to the accident said the driver of the Opel Corsa hatchback suddenly lost control and crashed head-on into the pillar of the Gordon Road bridge running over the highway," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

"Due to the extensive force of the impact, the entire front compartment of the car was crushed in, and the driver was killed."

While paramedics had difficulty assessing the 61-year-old man, they were able to determine that nothing more could be done to save his life.

The fire department used hydraulic equipment to cut open the vehicle. No one else was in the Corsa, and no other vehicles were involved.
