Durban - A 16-year-old boy from Pinetown who was pinned against a wall by a driverless minibus taxi at a carwash on Friday, has had to undergo urgent leg surgery.

Sifiso Khanyeza was working at the carwash next to Hay Hoe Service Station in Underwood Road, when the taxi started rolling, trapping him against the wall.

According to his uncle, Skebhe Khenyeza, who owns the carwash, the incident occurred when a staffer tried to move another vehicle.

“The staff member, who is not a driver, tried to move a taxi further down the road for more cleaning but he lost control,” said Khanyeza.

He said appropriate disciplinary steps have been taken against the staff member.

Sifiso is currently at RK Khan Hospital where he underwent surgery on Sunday.

According to ER24 paramedics, the accident could have been fatal.

“The taxi freewheeled down an incline for about 10 metres before hitting the victim,” said E24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.
