Drunk driver held after 4 passengers die

2012-04-07 13:05
Pretoria - Four people were killed and three others were injured in an accident near Cullinan in Pretoria on Saturday, Tshwane metro police said.

Spokesperson Charmain Louwrens said it was a single vehicle accident involving a bakkie with nine passengers.

"The wheel of the bakkie had burst on the R513 towards Cullinan and the driver lost control. Four people were declared dead on the scene and three were transported to hospital," she said.

"The driver was arrested for drunken driving."

Louwrens said the R513 from Mamelodi to Cullinan was closed until the scene was cleared.

In another accident in Pretoria, one woman was killed and two other people were injured when their car rolled on the N4 east in Watermeyer.

Louwrens said the driver lost control of the car as it went around a corner.

"It crashed into a bridge and rolled a few times. The woman was declared dead on the scene."

Louwrens said the other two people were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
