Cape Town - A 1-month-old baby has died after his drunk mother smothered him as she breastfed him.

The woman was out drinking with friends and came home to feed her baby in Nyanga, reported the Daily Voice.

She passed out and when she woke up the next day, her breast was still inside the little boy’s mouth but his lips had turned black and blood was coming out his nose.

The mother was distraught and didn’t want to talk about the baby’s death.

“It’s hurting and I still cannot believe that he is dead. I don’t want to talk of this anymore,” she said.

A neighbour said he couldn’t believe that she had slept next to her child’s dead body for so many hours.

“She cried for help but there was nothing we could do - the child was already dead,” he said.

A community worker says incidents of this nature are common around this time of year as people partied and lost control of themselves.

The woman has not been arrested but social workers will investigate the incident.
