Durban July: Fashion among the fillies

2015-07-05 15:00

The annual Vodacom Durban July took place at the Greyville Racecourse yesterday, and thousands turned out for the pony show.

The 2015 theme was the Captain’s Table, an interesting topic for the annual event, which is often characterised by weird and wonderful outfits.

Invited guests swanned, air-kissed and sipped chilled drinks in their various marquees.

One of the biggest parties took place in the Jack Daniel’s Boomtown marquee, which was, in essence, an open-air concert with the likes of Okmalumkoolkat, Black Coffee and other major artists performing.

The fashion had some great hits, but some even bigger misses.

YES – Bonang Matheba stepped out in a canary yellow dress by her favourite designer, Gert-Johan Coetzee, and looked resplendent. The gown had a beautiful embellished bodice that was balanced by a sleek and simple skirt with a fabulously high slit. She looked amazing, and rightly so, as the day’s live host of the red carpet broadcast on SABC3.

NO – Thando Thabethe went for a red-and-black lace pantsuit with a dramatic train. The lace ensemble had all the right ideas, as either a dress or pants maybe, but instead it looked like something out of The Addams Family. The pantsuit on its own may have worked, but the train added nothing to an already OTT look.

YES – Artist and presenter Stoan Seate, who has consistently looked great on the red carpet, wore a teal suit with a pair of brown crocodile-skin loafers and looked dashing. His black shirt was just the right amount of mute for the outfit, which could have gone very wrong on anyone else. He pulled this off well.

MAYBE – Spotted in the always-popular Afrotainment marquee was Durban’s own Dream Team – three guys in black and maroon – who went for a Destiny’s Child-esque outfit choice. The jury is still out on the white pants, but they managed to make jackets made of theatre drapes look swaggy.

YES – Presenter Zizo Beda went for a simple black crop-top look with a tutu skirt. Beda is adept at choosing outfits that look effortlessly great on her, and she adds the perfect accessories. She looked stylish but also comfortable for a day in the sun and at the races.

YES and NO– Vivian Reddy, his wife, Sorisha Naidoo, and Miss SA Liesl Laurie were spotted together. Mrs Reddy looked great in a red lace form-fitting gown, but Miss SA’s white gown was disappointing and underwhelming.

YES – King of Durban and Afrotainment boss DJ Tira looked suave in a fitted midnight-blue suit worn with a crisp white shirt and covetable black patent leather boots with the most subtle gold detailing. One of the best-dressed men yesterday.

YES – Spotted at the SABC marquee, Mpho Maboi wore a glamorous blue gown with peacock feathers at the bust. The dress had delicate detailing on the front, along with a train and a fab high slit. Her dress was all the glam without being too over the top – a look often seen at the Durban July.

YES –Actress Boity Thulo opted for a cute monochrome jumpsuit with a giant bow at the bust and cut-out detail on the legs. But her outfit needed no help from the chunky necklace, which let the great ensemble down.

YES –Bonnie Mbuli wore a geometric Black Coffee dress, complete with the regal headdress. She looked great in the dress’ structured lines and simple silhouette. A winning look.
