Johannesburg - Four men have been arrested for alleged housebreaking and attempted murder in Westville, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

The men, aged between 27 and 31, were caught in Birdhurst Road after a police chase on Thursday night, police spokesperson Jay Naicker said.

Police were called about a housebreaking in Methven Road, Westville, about 2km away.

The owner of the house was on holiday.

When police arrived they spotted the men speeding off in a car. They abandoned it and ran, shooting at the officers pursuing them.

In the ensuing shoot-out one of the robbers was hit in the leg.

Police dogs caught and bit the other three. They were taken to hospital under police guard.

Police recovered a firearm and a VW Polo reported stolen in Berea on 29 November.

The men would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday.
