Durban - A 22-year-old man drowned while swimming in the sea off Durban’s New Beach late on Wednesday night.

Rescuecare spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were called to the scene after off-duty municipal lifeguards, who had been playing volleyball at the time, had sprung into action and pulled the man from the water.

“Medics responded to the beach near Pier 107 and found the man had been pulled from the water by the lifeguards. Medics were informed that the man had been missing in the water for nearly 40 minutes,” he said.

“We assessed the patient but sadly there was nothing that could be done for him and he was declared dead on the beach.”

Jamieson added that police would investigate.

“It is unclear what prompted the man to go bathing at night when no lifeguards were on duty at the specific beach. We understand that he was with his brother at the time of the incident, who also identified his body when he was declared dead,” he said.
