Johannesburg - Two men who raped a woman last year were each handed 20-year jail terms in the Durban Regional Court on Thursday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

The pair approached the woman as she walked back home with her younger brother and asked her if she had any money or jewellery to give them, NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said.

"When she said that she had nothing; they took her into the nearby bushes and took turns raping her," Kara said in a statement.

"This was done in full sight of her brother, as they had tied his shoe laces together so that he wouldn't run away."

The men released the siblings when they were done raping the sister.

Two days later, the woman led police to the scene where she was accosted by the men.

"[She and the police] found the accused in the vicinity. She positively identified them and they were arrested. They were also identified via DNA evidence," said Kara.

In a statement, the woman told the court how the rape had affected her.

"The trauma that I have suffered is indescribable. I feel that when they raped me, they took a big chunk of my peace and happiness that cannot be restored," the woman said through a statement which was read by prosecutor Shayna Naidoo.

"No woman should go through what I went through because it was violating, degrading, disrespectful and embarrassing."

The NPA welcomed the sentence imposed.
