Cape Town - Two children have been denied enrolment at two different Durban schools, after an unemployed mother was asked for an upfront payment and a second school had a problem with their family arrangement.

Cathy Du Plessis, an unemployed mother of two girls aged 8 and 12, was turned away from Woodlands Primary school in Durban because she could not pay the R800 upfront enrolment fee per child.

Du Plessis then attempted to enrol the children at Montclair Junior School where she was told that her children’s living arrangements were not permitted by the school.

“The lady at Montclair said ‘we don’t even look at kids that stay with extended family,’ Du Plessis told News24.

Du Plessis and her partner live with an aunt and are both unemployed.

SA constitution

The SA constitution says that “everyone has the right to a basic education”.

According to government policy “no child can be refused admission to a school because his or her parents cannot afford to pay school fees” and “it is illegal for schools to charge registration fees or other upfront payments from parents when giving a child admission to a school”.

The principals of both schools were unable to comment to News24 and both the national and the Durban branch of the department of education were not contactable, despite several attempts on Wednesday.
