Durban taxi drivers protest

2012-05-18 12:48

Durban - Hundreds of taxi drivers were gathering in Durban on Friday for a second day of protests against the eThekwini metro police.

Police officers at the Botha Gardens were donning riot gear. They had brought riot vehicles and a water cannon.

Several of the minibus taxi drivers wielded metal pipes, knobkerries, planks, pangas, fire extinguishers, and hockey sticks.

Police were attempting to negotiate with the drivers to disperse. The drivers claimed the metro police were unfairly targeting them.

On Thursday police fought running battles with the drivers throughout the city centre. At least 20 were arrested.

They say it takes TWO to tango and if these taxi drivers who are known for their notorious and blatant violation of anything that is law full civilized or structured they would not be fined or harrased as they claim. This is once again proof of their destructive nature to bring everyone down to their low level.

Arrest more of them, impound their taxis and give them bigger fines. They are not a law unto themselves. They disrupt our lives on a daily basis. They kill thousands of people every day and they claim they are being targeted. What ever!

Shocking behavior again. Until these folk can learn to drive properly (obey the rules of the road), maintain their vehicles in a roadworthy state, respect the drivers around them, and acknowledge that they are responsible for the lives of millions of passengers on our roads everyday - they should all be locked up, every one (Including the bosses). I will fully support, however, those poor taxi bus passengers boycotting the use of taxi's for a week(and thus taking the wages away from this useless, un-regulated industry). C'mon folk, get a bicycle or scooter like the Chinese, get your independence back and boycott the taxi's!

They must just follow the rules of the roads then they won't be targets of the Metro police. They must remember that they are not the law and they don't own the streets. No one is above the law.

  • Rob - 2012-05-18 14:20

Maybe SAA should also protest about being unfairly targeted for safety inspections. LOL! Morons, you will not take the initiative to keep your vehicles in good running and roadworthy condition and then complain when somebody starts making sure that it is... Cry me a river or find a more respectable line of work. F@k@n taxis.

  • ditshegobt - 2012-05-18 14:25

They must be targeted, because they don't follow the raod rules.

  • Abdul - 2012-05-18 14:36

Do they really expect not to face the fire, for disobeying road rules and often endangering the lives of road users????Do they know how to behave on our roads. All drivers (taxi or not) should look at the website wwwfatalmovesdotcom
