E Cape Health MEC lays down the law

2010-12-09 15:43

East London - Newly-appointed Eastern Cape Health MEC Sicelo Gqobana has vowed to fight fraud and corruption in his department, and has promised that laziness will not be tolerated.

He was speaking in Bhisho, in his first general address to staff since he took on the post two weeks ago.

Gqobana also said he intended to address the department's ongoing audit woes, which were caused by "silly mistakes".

The department has had only one unqualified audit since 1994.

He hinted that he had information pointing to ongoing irregularities in procurement, and urged staff to speak up if they saw anything suspicious.
