E Cape cracks down on pupil transport
Cape Town - A total of 173 drivers carrying schoolchildren in the Eastern Cape have been fined since schools reopened this week, the provincial transport department said on Thursday.
Among them were 29 unlicensed drivers and six learner drivers.
Fines were also issued for 31 unlicensed or unregistered vehicles, 40 overloaded vehicles, and 24 defective steering wheels.
"This clearly demonstrates our commitment to ensure that we save the lives of our schoolchildren," said Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu.
