E Cape girl killed in accident
Johannesburg - A 15-year-old schoolgirl was killed on Thursday when she was hit by a car in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said.
The accident happened in Mission Village in Butterworth while the girl was walking to school, Captain Jackson Manatha said.
The Grade 10 pupil, at the Lamplough Senior Secondary School, died on the scene.
"The cause of the accident is not known at this stage, but wet roads as a result of heavy rain might have played a part."
Manatha said police had opened a case of culpable homicide against the driver, a government official at the education department's office in Butterworth.
He was apparently on his way to a meeting. The girl's name was not released as her family still had to be informed.
