Johannesburg - A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the double murder of an elderly couple on Broadlands Farm, near Elliot, on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

"The suspect has been positively linked to the crime scene and hails from Barkly East Township," said Captain Ursula Roelofse.

The man and woman, both in their 80s, were stabbed several times and a relative was injured in the attack on Wednesday morning.

The attackers gained access to the farmhouse through a small window, said Roelofse.

The Eastern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta commended the police for the arrest.

"The detective team worked tirelessly combing the crime scene for clues and arrested the suspect, within 9 hours of the incident reported to the police."

The man would appear in the Barkly East Magistrate's Court soon.
