Port Elizabeth - A mother and her two children burned to death when the paraffin stove she was using burst into flames, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

Inspector Mlungisi Matidane said the Nokuzola Msizazwe, 35, fell asleep while she was cooking supper on Thursday night.

"Msizazwe, 18-months-old Samkelo and two-months-old Olwami died on the spot. Her older girls aged 10 and 12 were taken to hospital in a critical condition."

An inquest docket was opened.
