E Rand police arrest over 2 000

Johannesburg - A total of 2 102 people were arrested in February on the East Rand for serious offences which included murder, robbery, housebreaking, rape and assaults.
Superintendent Andy Pieke said the total number of suspects for all offences arrested was 6 155 and that 121 stolen vehicles were recovered while 187 unlicenced firearms were seized. Police also recovered stolen goods.
For less serious offences such as those under the Liquor Act, 3 020 suspects were arrested, most of whom paid admission of guilt fines.
Almost 900 illegal immigrants were arrested and warrants of arrest were issued for 137 suspects.
Pieke said the SA National Defence Force and the Metropolitan police on occasion helped police.
