Johannesburg - Protests over toilets in KwaThema, on the East Rand, abated on Wednesday, police said.

Warrant Officer Tommy Tomlinson said no violence was reported and the situation was quiet.

"A community meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon to address the situation."

Police were told that protesters took to the streets after a contractor, who was supposed to build toilets and develop a drainage system, left the area.

The protests began on Tuesday night after a community meeting.
