E-tag refunds to cost Sanral R25m

2012-05-11 10:05

Johannesburg - E-tag refunds could cost the SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) R25m, The Star reported on Friday.

According to recent official figures, about 500 000 motorists had registered for the tags. This meant that if 500 000 customers requested a refund at R50 an e-tag, Sanral would pay out R25m.

Motorists were urged to apply for the refunds.

According to the agency's terms and conditions it could take up to two months before the customer was refunded, Cliff Johnston from the SA National Consumer Union told the newspaper.

That was why it was imperative that e-tag holders applied for a refund as soon as possible. Johnston said the issue of whether the e-toll project would start or not "will not be resolved in the near future".

On April 28 the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria granted an urgent interdict, brought by the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, to stop the launch of the electronic tolling system in Gauteng, pending a full court review to determine if it should be scrapped or not.

    Good!!!

      Jessica - 2012-05-11 10:13

He he looks the traitors will bring SANRAL finally down

      Dean - 2012-05-11 10:20

Why 2 months? How hard can it be to process a refund request? Seriously... If it's gonna take 2 months to process a simple refund how the hell did they think they were gonna cope with more complicated issues if the system was roled out?

      Jessica - 2012-05-11 10:20

Let me put it differently the poor motorists who buckled under the treats will have the last laugh and clinch victory over the bully

      Eye's Que - 2012-05-11 10:26

Ag Shame!!! See the worry in my eye!!! WHO CARES!!!

      Jacques - 2012-05-11 10:39

Jessica Haha... it still does not come out correctly. You mean the traitors that baught these tags now feel the pinch. Or the people that held off will have the last laugh

      Peter-Peter - 2012-05-11 10:47

@Dean: It will take 2 months because they need to train a BEE compliant person to turn on a computer...

      Brian - 2012-05-11 10:49

I to this day have still to meet someone who has bought an e-tag, I don't even know what one looks like. I am pretty sure the 500,000 they talk about being sold already belong to ANC government members which mean the tax payer would be paying for these toll anyway. I am prepared to pay 1 cent per km max with the e-tag for free......

      Amanda - 2012-05-11 10:58

Everybody who bought e-tags must ask for a refund otherwise it will be 25million in Sanral's pocket, free for mahala, stolen. Irrespective of the hassle please harass them for your money!

      Thouca - 2012-05-11 11:15

skewed reporting again...its not a cost, its simply an allocated pre-payment that might be refunded...and by my estimation, 500 000 registered people/vehicles far outnumber the noisy number on the marches (who predominantly are exempt anyway) and those kicking up a fuss wanting to south african to go back to african sandroads!! develop and build...you counter-evolutionaries!

      Sematla - 2012-05-11 11:19

I wonder how many of you are aware that the monies mentioned here belongs to you? You morons it is not the ANC OR the BLACKS money it is our money you are so happy to see going down the drain. Poor investment I must say but they are trying to increase our coffers.

      Francois - 2012-05-11 11:33

500 000 motorists my toe!!! More like 73 motorists! Another way for implicated corrupt execs of Sanral to siphon out more money and run, before the fit hits the shan.

      Greg - 2012-05-11 12:15

Too late, most of that money is all ready in the pockets of corrupt government officials...

      gemmaleigh.evans.3 - 2012-05-11 16:16

@Dean...it will take up to two months for them to refund you because they've already spent your money

      Pastoor - 2012-05-11 17:23

same as the gun lisences. i kept mine and will continue to keep them.

      henk63 - 2012-05-12 08:47

Correcton, when you refund someone, it does not cost you anything. They must merely return some of the money they tried to steal. That's all.

  • Dianne - 2012-05-11 10:10

    boo-blady-hoo! serves them right

      E=MC2 - 2012-05-11 10:28

      precisely!

      Msika - 2012-05-11 10:32

      Necklace them for being traitors.

      Jacques - 2012-05-11 10:40

Msika man that a bit harsh but get your point. To be honest i think Sanral Purchased 450,000 them selfs to make up the stats

      julia.ntuli - 2012-05-11 11:43

I say let them forfeit the refund! Why the heck did they buy E-Tag while the rest of us are out here trying to protest against this atrocity? Traitors!!!

  • Taetjo - 2012-05-11 10:12

Served you right... Up YOURS SANRAL! F()K JULLE!

      Herman - 2012-05-11 10:14

      Hahahahaha, well said

  • mastersvoice - 2012-05-11 10:15

What a disgraceful waste of public funds! I think the minister of transport should resign or be fired for this as well!

  • Piet - 2012-05-11 10:16

Why, We all told them not to get etags! Serves them right!!!

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-11 10:59

They should not be refunded. There is no meds for stupidity.

      Piet - 2012-05-11 11:06

Precisely Koos, Like the sheep they are the went and bought an Etag so that they can get screwed. And no they want to cry foul????

  • Farmworker - 2012-05-11 10:16

If I give you R10 and you had to give it back, how is that costing you? In fact your should be giving me an extra interest since I believe they would have saved a couple of thousands on loan interests

      Peter - 2012-05-11 10:51

      Sorta good point I think?

      Sibongile - 2012-05-11 11:29

They used it already to pay expenses for the customer services kiosks, salaries, rent & other related costs.

      Farmworker - 2012-05-11 11:37

@Sibongile Your logic is wrong, If you knew the business very well you would know that when you request for a loan to finance you have to includes all those cost you mentioned in the loan amount otherwise how do you expect to pay salaries, etc. Unless you saying bonuses then I would understand but that would also only be when the business is doing well

      des.palm - 2012-05-11 12:04

Ja Boet, then calculate the interest they are getting for holding the R25m for 2 months.....

  • Jean - 2012-05-11 10:17

Dis reg, betaal terug julle bliksems!!!

      Christian J Denyschen - 2012-05-11 10:23

ek dink nou weer nie hulle moet nie laat daai verraaiers ma hulle R50 verloor hulle wou mos registreer.

      Jean - 2012-05-11 10:29

Ek hoor jou, maar enige iets wat vir Sanral verder in die rooi in bring pas my, hul wou mos so arrogant optree!

      Msika - 2012-05-11 10:33

      Ja!

  • Fanie - 2012-05-11 10:17

Just when they thought it couldn't get worse. Wonder who will resign next?

  • Gisela - 2012-05-11 10:18

No it should not cost them that - it was money still to be used by motorists. So glad we all stuck to our No eTag

  • Msika - 2012-05-11 10:18

SANRAL please do just one right thing this time by NOT refunding those traitors.

      Felix - 2012-05-11 10:34

The money has probably been stolen already anyway.

  • Anton - 2012-05-11 10:19

I think a lot of people will just loose that R50 because it will be to much of a hassle to apply for the refund. And it served them right to loose the money because they did not want to stand with the rest of us against the E-Toll, no they went like a bunch of good sheep and applied for this high way robbery. They might as well open the car window before someone smash it and give the wallet to the hijacker.

      Marion - 2012-05-11 10:44

@Anton - love your last sentence. Kudos.

  • Khomotso - 2012-05-11 10:19

I just feel sorry for the people who were hired to work for the etolls. They might be unemployed soon. Anyway, i hope they do refund us

      Farmworker - 2012-05-11 10:21

I don't think they were ever employed permanently, probably just exploited by the labor brokers

      Msika - 2012-05-11 10:37

So Khomotso you one of the traitors I see. Well, I hope they do NOT refund you. They rather give that money to the poeple who will be unemployed soon.

      Marion - 2012-05-11 10:45

@Khomotso - I also feel very sorry for those people. They should all try to find alternative employment whilst they are still employed by SANRAL. Easier to find a job while you're employed.

      Khomotso - 2012-05-11 10:53

      @Msika, what do u mean a traitor?

      Msika - 2012-05-11 11:03

@ Khomotso, traitor because you purchased an E-Tag. Your last sentence "Anyway, i hope they do refund us" implies this.

      Piet - 2012-05-11 11:04

So you where one of the stupid ones who bought and etag, I feel for you!!!

      Khomotso - 2012-05-11 11:20

I had to, i used to work for them

      Farmworker - 2012-05-11 12:51

      Khomotso -I understand you

  • dewald.galjaard - 2012-05-11 10:20

Don't tell me you spent it already???

  • michael.a.devilliers - 2012-05-11 10:21

It's going to COST SCAMRAL R25M? So, what happened to the money they collected? Just vanish?

      RObert - 2012-05-11 10:27

They Mean to remove it also lol.

  • Lizette - 2012-05-11 10:21

Never mind, they were so eager to give you what ever you demand. Keep it.

  • Joubs1957 - 2012-05-11 10:27

By the way: I heard Alli never resigned, he was TOLLED to go!!! :-)

      Ze Don - 2012-05-11 10:33

      That's punny! (Sorry, I couldn't resist) :-P

      Shaun - 2012-05-11 10:35

Wa ha ha ha ha ha

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-05-11 10:43

      Nice one!!

  • kevin.moreland2 - 2012-05-11 10:32

    fail!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hugh - 2012-05-11 10:33

This report is nothing but a speculative report from News24. SANRAL "claims" 500 000 people had applied for tags. Surely not the truth, but money incorrectly deducted from the stooges may amount to a large sum. Still, serves them right.

  • Shaun - 2012-05-11 10:34

Can you pronounce... FAIL!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha, burn Sanral you nicompoops....

  • Nigel - 2012-05-11 10:34

Good. Now perhaps they will understand South Africans in general are not retarded, we're just a little laid back. Don't mistake us for fools.

  • martin.obrien1 - 2012-05-11 10:38

And how is that OUR problem,,, do I go to the government and ask them to sort out my finances??? You made your bed,,,

  • Mokhoaetsi - 2012-05-11 10:40

keep it ds should be a lesson to those traitors

      Piet - 2012-05-11 11:04

      My sentiments exactly!

  • Marion - 2012-05-11 10:41

Those who bought eTags folded too easily and deserve to wait two months for any refunds. There is a time when even law-abiding citizens need to engage in civil disobedience and this was one of those times.

  • Dianne - 2012-05-11 10:41

how about changing the name SCAMRAL to SCUMRAL!

  • John - 2012-05-11 10:43

Of the so called 500 000 tags that were registered how many are government vehicles? I really doubt that many private or company vehicles complied with this form of financial terrorism.

  • Anita - 2012-05-11 10:50

How is it a cost? This money belongs to the public, they paid it in, they just getting it back!

  • giorgio.fioravanti1 - 2012-05-11 10:56

In the meantime SANRAL are earning interest on the 25 mil ! People must get their money back asap !

  • rankati - 2012-05-11 10:56

    Unnecessary mess

  • Thys - 2012-05-11 11:05

start billing them, they were so eager to jump ship....

  • Jean - 2012-05-11 11:09

    U apply to refund??

  • miro.bagrov - 2012-05-11 11:10

hahahaha! That's what happens when you try to make plans but don't know anything about planning and try to do business but don't know anything about business... Government lackeys..

  • Martin - 2012-05-11 11:12

man and im so stoked my popcorn lasted this long.

  • louis.langenhoven - 2012-05-11 11:13

they received the money- it should still be there if not stolen- no problem to pay it back in my view....DON'T say it will cost them- they were given it in the first place

  • clivelang1 - 2012-05-11 11:28

Well if the numbers are to be delivered Scamral was paid the 25 million to begin with, so whats the problem??? Oh I forgot, it was probably spent on a couple a new cars, perhaps a holiday or two and some home renovations....

  • Gerrit - 2012-05-11 11:31

The way Sanral is managed they probably give you a post dated cheque.

  • Talente - 2012-05-11 11:36

This has nothing to do with BBEE compliance, but the people who bought the E-tag must get at least 75% of the money for selling us out like that. And the rest be received for the petrol tax at least if petrol can go down with 3cents lol it will becomes R11.99 to fool there stupid minds of the ones who bought e-tags who will think it has gone down

  • Warwick - 2012-05-11 11:37

    As dumb as sh*t.

  • Carolyn - 2012-05-11 11:39

What do they mean by IF the registered etag customers want a refund they have paid money for no reason, typical now we have your money it's complicated to send it back to you what a joke!!!

  • EricksonTL - 2012-05-11 11:42

Actually, since it was never THEIR money to begin with, the only cost to them is the administrative one.

  • Carry - 2012-05-11 11:47

AND THE BANK FEES FOR THESE REVERSE CHARGES MUST COME OUT OF ALL THE GOVERNMENT MEMBERS' PERSONAL SALARIES !!!!!

  • tawanda.gatsi - 2012-05-11 11:48

    What a flop! OMW!

  • Carry - 2012-05-11 11:49

SCAMRAL SHOULD NEVER HAVE EVEN BE FORMED - IT IS JUST ANOTHER FUNNEL FOR HIDING TAX PAYERS MONIES. THE GOVERNMENT ALREADY HAS A DEPARTMENT FOR ROAD WORKS - THIS JUST SHOWS HOW SKELM THIS GOVERNMENT REALLY IS.

  • Angelica - 2012-05-11 11:50

GEE IF ITS THAT HARD TO PAY IT BACK IM SURE EVEN THE PEOPLE THAT REGISTERED WOULD SAY KEEP YOUR BLOODY MONEY IF THEY COULD JUST TAKE IT AWAY!!!!

  • IcemanGP - 2012-05-11 11:55

2 frigging months for a refund. Yet SCAMRAL wanted to nail non etagged motorists to pay within 7 days \or else\. What a joke, but to all those looking for refunds, why did you buy in the first place? But get your money back, don't let SCAMRAL party for free. Cause if you ignore it, I'm unemployed and wouldn't mind R50 donated to me either.

  • Sasha - 2012-05-11 11:55

    Go Go GO! :)

  • Carry - 2012-05-11 11:56

ACCORDING TO ONE OF THESE NEWS REPORTS, SCAMRAL HAS ALREADY BEEN OPERATING FOR MORE THAN A YEAR WITH OVER 1000 PEOPLE. DOING WHAT AND BEING PAID FROM WHERE? THEN TO TOP THIS ALL OFF - THEY ALLOW ANOTHER COMPANY TO BE FORMED "THE TOLL COLLECTION AGENCY" AT A HUGE FEE JUST TO COLLECT THESE TOLLS. SOUNDS JUST LIKE AN anc COLLABORATION - DOESN'T IT. AND THE TAX PAYER JUST KEEPS ON BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE.

  • Denise - 2012-05-11 11:58

Didn't the upgrade project cost R25m? Well since everyone who registered for the e-tag was obviously prepared to support Sanral in this then let Sanral keep the money which should then cover the cost of the upgrade. Sorted.

  • Rob - 2012-05-11 12:00

How can a refund be classified as a 'cost'? Lost revenue maybe, but definitely not a cost. Sounds like mind shaping accounting/reporting to me...... ...Preparing the way for a victim scenario.

  • paulgerber969 - 2012-05-11 12:03

    Why did they register ???????

  • mikeangell61 - 2012-05-11 12:17

    Screw these people!!!
