E-tolls: The 5 stages of grief

This week Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the government’s new dispensation on the controversial e-tolls issue. Everyone secretly hoped that the announcement would mean the complete scrapping of the system, but alas that sliver of hope was slowly, cruelly extracted with each word from Ramaphosa.

The initial reaction from social media was that of shock and sadness:

And to add salt into the wounds of Gautengers Ramaphosa made sure to add that the government was “caring, responsible and responsive” – something that did not impress certain people.

After that the stages of grief kicked in. First came denial and isolation:

Soon after that came the wave of anger:

Others tried to move to the next stage and turned to bargaining:

But some people just could not let go of the anger:

As the weeks continue we are sure to see signs of depression and eventually acceptance because the government does not seem to be letting up anytime soon.
