Johannesburg - A man was shot dead by robbers who attacked him on his way to a bank in Kenton-on-Sea outside Port Alfred on Monday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
Two armed robbers attacked the businessman, who was with two relatives, while he approached a local Standard Bank to deposit weekend takings at 11:00, said Captain Mali Govender.
"A struggle ensued and one of the robbers, who had a gun, fired several shots, wounding the victim," said Govender.
He died on his way to hospital.
The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
A search for three getaway vehicles believed to have been used by the robbers was immediately launched.
The vehicles were a grey Isuzu double cab and a blue Toyota Corolla, which the robbers parked in front of the bank, and a white Nissan sedan they parked on a street behind the bank.
"We did not find any of the vehicles and the suspects are still at large," said Govender.
