Brussels - European Union leaders paid tribute to former South African president Nelson Mandela, the bloc's President Herman Van Rompuy calling him "one of the greatest political figures of our times".

"Mandela changed [the] course of history for his people, country, continent and the world," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso wrote on Twitter.

"My thoughts are with his family and people of South Africa."

"South Africa today loses its father, the world loses a hero," said European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

"He has been a fighter, a leader and a source of inspiration for so many people."

"Today the whole world is mourning," said EU lawmaker Joseph Daul of the European People's Party.

"Nelson Mandela was a model for us all regardless of our origin, race, or beliefs. He embodied the values of forgiveness, courage and responsibility at the highest level."
