East Rand expects high traffic volumes

Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni authorities expected high traffic volumes over the weekend as people travelled to Bloemfontein for the ANC's centenary celebrations.

"The City of Ekurhuleni's emergency services and metro police are on high alert this weekend," the departments said in a joint statement on Friday.

The weekend also marked the end of the festive season when holidaymakers would return from the coast.

The N3, R21, R24, R59 direction Vaal and Gillooly's interchange in Bedfordview would be monitored. Most of the country's major roads pass through Ekurhuleni.

"Our emergency services teams are ready to respond to any eventuality on our roads while also not compromising responses to our residents," spokesman William Ntladi said.

Metro police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said: "There will be zero tolerance to motorists who do not show regard to fellow road users and to laws on the road.

"The aim is not to add to the high death toll experienced on our roads nationally this festive period."
