Johannesburg - A businessman from Witbank was arrested on Thursday after the kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl, police said.
The girl was still missing by late afternoon, said Captain Alfred Nakana.
She failed to return home after her mother sent her to the Elangeni Shopping Complex in Daveyton on the East Rand to buy groceries on Monday morning.
"Around 22:00, the mother received a call from a man demanding R80 000 in cash for the safe return of her daughter. She immediately went to the police station."
The police traced the phone call and arrested the 40-year-old man at his house in Witbank on Thursday.
"Preliminary investigations led the police to the house of the man who is the owner of taxis and buses," Nakana said.
"The girl is still missing. She is wearing a summer dress."
Investigations continue and the man is expected to appear in court soon.
Police asked anyone with useful information to call Captain Angel Mthethwa on 083-479-7196.
