Johannesburg - A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a man to death in Mgagasi Village at Butterworth, Eastern Cape, police said on Monday.

He allegedly stabbed a 29-year-old man to death at a traditional ceremony at Sidutyini on Sunday and then left, police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said.

Off-duty police officers, who attended the ceremony in a community capacity, were tipped off about the incident and chased the man.

They caught him in a taxi outside Butterworth on his way to Johannesburg.

The man was expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
