East London - Mop up operations are set to start in the Eastern Cape following heavy flooding over the weekend, the provincial local government ministry said on Monday.

"Cool, sunny and warmer temperatures have been predicted for the entire province and we believe that this will make it easy for relief and disaster management teams to travel and to clean up on Monday following the heavy rains," said spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha.

Three people died when a rondavel collapsed during floods in the village of Mayalulweni in Tsolo on Saturday night.

In Port St Johns, cars were submerged and scores of people were evacuated as floods engulfed the area.

Residents were evacuated to the local town hall, where they were given blankets and meals.

Parts of the R61 between Port St Johns and Lusikisiki had been partially closed following a landslide.

"We appeal to our municipalities to ensure that they work with our communities not to build homes in areas along the flood lines," said Sicwetsha.

"We send condolences to those who lost their loved ones during this disaster."
