Eastern Cape teacher vacancies to be filled

Johannesburg - A total of 140 teacher vacancies in the
Eastern Cape will be filled by the end of the month, the Legal Resources Centre
said on Thursday.
It said the basic education department would use
temporary teachers for this purpose until better-qualified candidates were
appointed.
"The agreement makes provision for some appointments
to be made permanent if no more candidates are found," said Legal
Resources Centre lawyer Sarah Sephton.
On Wednesday, the Centre for Child Law (CCL), schools and
their governing bodies filed an urgent application on the issue in the Eastern
Cape High Court in Grahamstown.
They wanted the court to order Basic Education Minister
Angie Motshekga to put into effect another court interdict ordering her
department to appoint 140 teachers in the vacant posts, and to pay the
appointed teachers in the province.
The department had failed to fulfil the order handed down
in August last year.
Sephton said it was agreed that the temporary teachers,
appointed in the meantime, would be paid while they were in their positions.
Sephton said the CCL would like to see all schools having
teachers but it was happy with the agreement made on Thursday.
"We only hope the department fills the positions as
a lot of learners are not receiving an education."
The department of education was not immediately available
for comment.
